In Part 2 of The Journey Podcast, Katherine “Kate” Hirchak takes a deeper look into the research studies being conducted through Doya Natsu Healing Center in partnership with Washington State University. This episode explores the purpose behind the Zaunt Goot-tant (“Good Courage”) study and the CAM Healing Journey project, focusing on how culturally respectful, community-centered research can support wellness and recovery for Native people.
Kate explains what participation in the studies actually looks like—from weekly visits and conversations about wellness goals to exploring holistic approaches such as chiropractic care, massage therapy, and recovery engagement strategies. She discusses why researchers are focusing on areas like mental health, substance use, sleep, pain reduction, connection, and meaningful activities that bring purpose and balance into people’s lives.
This conversation also breaks down the importance of confidentiality, trust-building, and creating research environments where Native participants feel respected, heard, and empowered rather than judged. Kate shares how these projects are designed not only to gather information, but to help strengthen pathways toward healing, resilience, and community wellness.
